Rwanda is a rather unusual but increasingly interesting destination for remote work. Especially the capital, Kigali, has developed strongly in recent years—both economically and infrastructurally. The city is considered one of the safest and most organized in Africa. For digital nomads, Kigali offers a growing number of coworking spaces, modern cafés with stable Internet, and comparatively good living conditions. The Internet speed in Kigali is sufficient for most digital activities, including video calls and cloud work. Coworking spaces such as “Westerwelle Startup House” or “Impact Hub Kigali” provide professional workplaces, often combined with networking events and local initiatives.
The cost of living is moderate. There are apartments available for long-term rent, a variety of restaurants, and markets selling fresh local produce. English and French are official languages, making everyday life relatively easy for international visitors to navigate. Rwanda places great value on cleanliness and order—a feature that clearly distinguishes Kigali from many other major cities on the continent. Public spaces are well-maintained, and traffic is relatively quiet and regulated.
In leisure time, the country offers access to impressive nature: volcanoes, rainforests, and Akagera National Park are easily accessible. Visiting mountain gorillas in the Virunga Mountains is possible but strictly regulated and cost-intensive. Rwanda is particularly suitable for those who want to work in a quiet, structured environment and have an interest in African politics, economics, or development. The country is less focused on classic “work & travel” motifs such as beaches or entertainment; instead, it offers stability, security, and a clear social framework.
